Requesting permission to quote this beautiful line...“Honoring Juneteenth by shutting up, donating, and learning.” ❤️

Love this Dr P, but I can't abide people saying "Happy Juneteenth". "Blessed Juneteenth" MAYbe, but you nailed it with "Happy End of Slavery Day" - the two concepts just don't go together. At. All. The "happy" implies that it was a gift somehow from white people and that makes my blood boil when all my well-meaning white friends say it. The best I heard - from a Jewish friend this morning - was "Wishing you Sanity on this Juneteenth." THAT I can get behind!!! Thanks for all your writing.

This is the best thing I’ve read all year. It did make me cackle and cringe and it made my heart race. Still grinning from your sharp writing.

Hilarious! And great advice. Learning how to say “None of this is about me” has been an important part of my education.

This was a great read. If you feel the need to celebrate today, quietly purchase from black owned businesses.

Thanks for the education. I was somewhat mystified about whether white people should participate at all.

So weird of you to say that because I would say white people can best honor and celebrate Juneteenth by understanding and acknowledging that Juneteenth is AMERICAN HISTORY. Like that's it; that's how you honor it.

Thanks Rested Black Woman. I'm still learning. I was raised taught there are no differences between people, but abilities. I never even began to understand about racism until I was well over 60. My friend who started my education said to me and reminds me regularly: "It's not our job to teach you anything. It's your job to learn." So I really appreciate receiving teachable moments.

The writing isn’t just exceptional here — it’s exceptional everywhere you write. Every post oozes charisma, clarity, and razor-sharp wit. I’ve laughed, squirmed, learned, and gone back to re-read. It’s rare to find a voice this sharp, consistent and uncompromising. In awe.

Since my music theory professor announced to the class that if I married a Catholic I'd end up with a dozen kids because I have no sense of rhythm, I avoid clapping to music.

I'm broke, so my only other offering is to tell you about a woman I worked with in publishing years ago, who always took off on Juneteenth to stay home and read in memory of her ancestors who weren't allowed to learn to read.

Old, Jewish, white woman here. Do you know most of us didn’t know about Juneteenth until President Biden made it a federal holiday? Of course you know about that, it’s clear in your post, so here’s what I mean: white people in this country control the history, and when I say white people, I mean white male christians who have quashed the history of anyone who is not them. Then comes the question of how we can honor it: for the last couple of years, saying happy Juneteenth seemed wrong but what else is there? Yesterday, I posted something that today feels patronizing but screw it, because today I read your post and got a tremendous lesson. In future, I will honor Juneteenth by saying something from a comment below - wishing you sanity on this Juneteenth - but I will add this: keep teaching us (me) before FOTUS whitewashes this history. And one more thing, Dr. Patton: please help those of us who really want to learn, to make up for lost time. Especially we boomers who grew up with a kind of passive racism that we’ve had to unlearn.
