Thank you! As usual, you get to the heart of the matter. Your accurate chronicling of the deplorable truth of US history is something far too few people know. Our country has been built on the exploitation of people who got in the way. Hate is the point, not the product, and our country sells hate with its 24-hour news cycle and constant election cycles.
Please continue to document the insanity gripping this country. Some of us are reading, and cheering you on!
I've always said that ongoing alcoholism, drug abuse, and suicidal ideation that is prevalent among reservations is a form of long form genocide. They're really hoping they just die off. When you look at families like mine.. my dad had a marriage before my mom to native women. Every single one of those kids are dead. They all pretty much drank themselves to death. He married my mom and had 5 kids. My oldest brother committed suicide and my sister died of an overdose. My dad died of cancer at 69 which is really young and prevalent among people of color in general. His sister had a lot of kids she also lost 2 one to suicide and they other was murdered. Their cousin had kids die as well. His daughter was murdered and they never found her head or her killer.
There is so much pain there and I can only imagine watching what's happening right now is extremely terrifying. My family doesn't leave the reservation without their Rez ID cards. Not that I'm hopeful that would even help.
Thank you. I appreciate that. I was writing about my family for a paper and spoke with my closest cousin. He, nor his wife even knew the term "generational trauma" and I basically said "the indigenous are the poster kids for generational trauma" and I explained to them what it meant and all they said "yes that's extremely common."
When I was a young girl, I met a native American girl at school and I defended her and we became very close friends and I would go up during the summer and spend with her on the reservation and I did it for three years and I absolutely loved it. I didn’t wanna come home, even though I was very close to my family and my siblings. I liked their way of life. I liked how they were. It was cool. I still think about it. I’m 74.
I think it's really awesome that you got to do that. It's sad but I think the indigenous in this nation are a barely a concept because the though of them is so far removed from most Americans
My sister works for a multi tribe council on addiction treatment, and she talks about cultural trauma as one of the major causes of substance abuse. A lot of the treatment they do is connecting people with their tribal heritage, learning the language and the ceremonies.
You're most definitely right. My dad's generation was really bad off, not to mention the ones that came before his, and the kids (my siblings, cousins, and I) have a lot of substance abuse and mental health issues. The Menominee Reservation has honestly been putting in work. I wrote a paper on it for my sociology class a couple of semesters ago but it's all very much about getting community engaged with cultural revival called Menomini yoU. https://menominiyou.org/
It's has a more proactive approach because the lines between loss of culture, identity, and substance abuse are like the jumble of cords behind your TV. Messy, knotted up, intertwined, and dusty AF.
I watched the documentary where they took kids away from their tribes to colonize them. The horror those kids endured by inhumane people broke my heart. I hate this has happened to your people. There is a reckoning a coming. Nature seems to be doing her magic by burning and drowning this country at the same time. May you all find peace again very soon.
Was it the Canary Effect? That's a really good documentary to watch and you can find it for free on YouTube. Use caution though because it is very heartbreaking
"A country that never repented for genocide still breeds people who fantasize about finishing it. And the rest of us need to stop pretending they don’t mean it.” Yep, I agree! This is a nightmare. They truly mean it! It is both obvious and deliberate!
Their intentions extend beyond just eliminating Native populations; they target all vulnerable groups. Let’s not forget the ethnic cleansing of COVID-19. Mass incarceration is also a form of genocide. And hanging over our heads like strange fruit is the distressing "Big Ugly Law," which will strip healthcare from millions, ultimately leading to more deaths.
It is not only genocide, but a crime against humanity!
Well this goes way beyond being the "best response" to Coulter's evilness. It's a succinct summary indictment of the "American" experiment in colonialism, slavery, manifest destiny -- all of it, in a two-minute read. I don't know how you do this; but I'm very glad you do it, and that you share it widely.
When I lived in Colorado, my job required hundreds of miles of driving every week for almost two years. In my travels, everything I thought I had learned about indigenous tribes was washed away. And yes, I had definitely tried to learn. But the information, not always the truth, was delivered in limited doses. And always mitigated by lies and arrogance. And whiteness.
Everybody needs to go to Sand Creek. They need to feel the echoes trapped in the soil. It isn't a place for answers. But it is a place to grasp the weight of responsibility we all share.
Above all, never underestimate the influence the indigenous tribes have on our white world.
And as I write these words, I know they are true of for the descendants of the slaves who built so much of our existence in this place.
You said it ALL! I can't tell you how many times I've sat thinking about how different history would look if we had never shown up. Or had been shown the damn door. And I think reservations are the biggest slap in the face. All of it makes me so f'n angry.
As a 71-year-old white guy, I am enraged daily that the racists can now walk amongst civilized folks in broad daylight, thanks to the MAGA movement. I think often about my ‘privilege’ in this society but paid for with the pain and tears of non-whites. My only power is to be who I am and release love and respect to my community in the best way I can. Thanks for your voice.
She intentionally said Indian and not Native American to erase their native-ness and ownership of this land.
And just like the first time around when white immigrants brought disease that killed so many Native Americans, RFK is doing it again. Banning vaccines and medications will hurt the disadvantaged first, and most. That’s Native communities. Colonists’ dream finally coming true.
What I learned as a student in school, and taught as a teacher, was that, by 1900, the American indigenous population had declined 90% compared to 1492 estimates. We killed far too many.
Anne Coulter is a vile pos. But what’s more vile is that this kind of inflammatory rhetoric is normal now. To my dying day I will never understand or forgive.

I am so sorry. Generational trauma. 💔

I love learning from you! I love your truths and how you don’t flinch when you tell it like it is. Thank you!
It still happening to this day. Look up missing and murdered indigenous women and girls here in Canada.
I second this
Canada has more Indians than ever.
Also I really appreciate your take on well everything you write about

You're right. Sand Creek was beyond words one of the worst massacres on this land.
Only one other time did I feel darkness swirling like that so profoundly. When I stood where my Uncle likely had outside Dachau.
You said it ALL! I can't tell you how many times I've sat thinking about how different history would look if we had never shown up. Or had been shown the damn door. And I think reservations are the biggest slap in the face. All of it makes me so f'n angry.
Pure E.V.I.L.
Thank you for never stopping to spread truth.

Another thoughtful article on the very putrid cos playing woman ann coulter. And the very fucked up criminally insane disease of white racism.
